UniKL MICET Student Selected as Malaysia’s Envoy to Germany

Once again, UniKL stand tall in the eyes of the world when Natassia Juliana Zaini, an undergraduate student under the programme Bachelor of Chemical Engineering Technology in Polymer, from UniKL Malaysian Institute of Chemical and Bioengineering Technology (UniKL MICET) was conferred the honour to represent Malaysia in the Global Bayer Young Environmental Envoy 2011 to Germany in October 2011.

The award was presented by YAB Datin Paduka Seri Rosmah Mansor in a ceremony organised by Bayer Co. (Malaysia) Sdn. Bhd. held at Cyberjaya on August 11, 2011. Natassia and another undergraduate student from USM were announced as the top two envoys representing Malaysia to Germany among six other candidates from other local IPTA/IPTS.

Bayer Young Environmental Envoy is a programme initiated by Bayer in collaboration with United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) which served as a global environment education programme for the youth. This annual youth programme was initiated with the aim to develop young environmental leaders and enhancing environmental awareness among youth worldwide.

The programme was open to all Malaysian citizens enrolled in a higher learning institution age 18 to 24. Envoys were short listed by Bayer based on their passion in making the world a greener place, environmental conscience and green ideas for the future.

Driven by her passion for art and conscience for the environment, Natassia Juliana Zaini emerged as winner at the national level with her effort in promoting the use of recyclable materials to be commercialized as art craft products. She took a step in promoting the idea by teaching art lessons to primary school students of Sekolah Kebangsaan Cherana Putih, Alor Gajah, Melaka on creative ways to make art craft / product using recyclable waste like plastic bags, paper, cardboard and also agro waste. 60% of the students in SK Cherana Putih are the natives of Temuan tribes. The students’ art craft was then displayed in art exhibitions and was commercialized and marketed to local craft entrepreneurs.

Fully sponsored by Bayer, Natassia will join other winners and envoys from 17 countries worldwide for a week long study trip to Germany where the envoys will be exposed to principles and applications of modern environmental protection in Germany and gain valuable experience and knowledge on the contribution of industries to a sustainable development. They will also be in the running for €1,000 funding to further their environmental efforts.

Congratulations to Natassia Juliana and UniKL MICET on this great achievement!
